What message did you get growing up about guns from your parents?

This is inspired by the thread with the similar name about drugs, but it's meant to be a serious thread, not a parody.

My dad owns guns, and taugt me to shoot them, but he never bought them for me or anything.

My dad had a gun. I was never allowed to touch it or look at it. It was under his bed. Big rifle.

hasn't been used for years (10+ years). Will it fire now if I wanted to fire it or do I have to clean it or something?

I dont know squat about guns.

While guns are banned for citizens in the UK, my father's a Wing Shooting Officer with the ATC (Air Training Corps, like Scouts for the RAF but a bit more serious because they're actually reserves), and he takes his range safety very seriously. I've never been allowed near a range.

my dad has been a gun-buyer for years. he has a few collectable pieces, and a number of guns he bought because he doesnt seem to know what to do with his money. a few shotguns, 4 pistols, and at least 20 various types of rifles, most of which he never bothers to use.

ive never owned a gun myself, but he made sure to emphasize safety whenever handling them, and and i knew well never to touch them. he keeps a couple loaded around the house; usually a shotgun in his bedroom, and a .22 rifle.

he has this impulse to buy things that are on sale or something something. i remember him coming into work last year telling me he just bought a shotgun with a folding stock and a 7.62 something, with a fair amount of ammo, for $500 as he was walking past a pawn shop and met a man who couldnt find anyone to buy his stuff. hes strange like that.

My Dad had a rifle and a .44 Magnum. He liked to take them out and show them to us when he was drunk. Both he and the guns were loaded. I grew up fearing "accidental" death.

My family has been living in suburbia.

My Dad was like why do I need a gun except to show my own insecurities.

My parents never had a gun, but thought people were retarded for not teaching their kids proper gun use (don't point the gun at your face to check for bullets kind of stuff).

Are you that dangerous, or is she just ignorant?

Happy 10th birthday, he's your first rifle!
Yep - except I was 12. :)

Dad had a couple shotguns and a rifle in an unlocked gun cabinet in the basement. I got a BB gun at maybe eight years old. Started shooting when I was 10 or so. Got my own rifle, a Marlin-Glenfield bolt action .22 with 4X scope, for my twelfth birthday.

None of the above. My parents did not want any guns in the house but had both myself and my sister take a gun familiarization course when we were about 10-12.

Well I am that dangerous, cause I have no experience with firearms. Of course if I bought one I would train with it

My dad always told me to wear bright orange to avoid getting shot by rednecks.

None. My parents never owned guns and never talked much about them. They also didn't buy toy guns for us, they never said anything about it, they just didn't buy them.

Note: My parents are not crunchies; they are life long Republicans.

my dad owned a gun and never really said anything, except the typical "guns don't kill people, people kill people."

We were all trained on firearm safety as soon as we could grasp the subject.

Even for all you gun grabbers, if "Just say no" ignorance didn't work for drugs, and doesn't work for sex, WTF makes you think it will work for guns?

My father believed the Second Amendment was as important, and applied to individual liberty as all the rest.

"I won't own any guns in my house"

and that message has carried through to this generation (now that I'm a parent).

The way I see it, if I had a gun lying around, it'd need to be locked up and unloaded, and in an emergency situation if I had time to get it, load it, and use it (not sure I could) I think I'd have other options too that didn't involve the gun.

Just my opinion and I support others rights to have different ones.
