Mobo is overly expensive IMHO.
If you're doing P55, the mobo shouldn't be in X58 mobo $$$ territory.

Well I'm going with the Deluxe because it also does have a $30 back thing so it takes it down to $170.

The Gigabyte you mentioned has the 2nd PCI E running at 4 only, if I want to crossfire that would be a problem would it not? That's what I've read anyway.

Reduced number of PCI-E 2.0 lanes. Only 16 lanes in total because they are on die and that's what Intel chose. X58 on the other hand has native support for up to 36 PCI-E 2.0 lanes through the chipset.

The upshot of which is you can find x58 boards that will support upto tri sli/crossfire in x16, x8, x8 configuration or sli/crossfire with 2 cards in x16 x16 configuration. With P55 you can only expect x8, x8 for sli/crossfire configuration. You can improve things if you buy one of the few boards that adds an nVidia NF200 chip for additional graphics lanes but they are generally pricey.

I myself am a P55 SLIer and I don't lose any performance or sleep over the reduced PCI-E lanes. It is something I'm aware of and will base my subsequent graphics cards purchases with that in mind. I'm confident my board will be good for another generation of GPUs - so another 18months - 2 years and I don't mind changing after that amount of time anyway.

thanks for the info. Looks like you have basically the same setup that I'm shooting for. Have you tried BC2 and if yes what FPS do you get on high settings and have you also tried it without sli?
 
You're DAMN RIGHT I've tried BC2. Really, really enjoying it at the moment 🙂 Battlefield has been my favourite online shooter for a long time.

Settings as follows - Highest settings for everything (that directx 10 allows) HBAO on, x8 AF and 2x AA at 1920x1200. Average framerate must be 60-70 fps and I do see dips to the 40s.

I've found that with my cards the 196.75 (bad nVidia driver) gave very smooth play but I reverted to 196.21 when the driver was withdrawn. 196.21 gives seemingly similar frame rates but feels much less smooth with SLI. Just switched to the new beta 197.13 and much smoother play so far.

Oh and BTW. Answering your original post - The GEIL RAM I have is on the QVL and was a great price in the UK when I ordered. Have no problems getting advertised timings at the correct voltage. There should be pretty good memory compatibility with that board now. There was another BIOS update to improve the range of memory kits that worked. There is also always the MEM OK feature on the board if you are having problems getting a POST.

I would just go for a quality vendor of your choice with a low voltage kit at 1600 MHz and timings of your preference (have seen people use Corsair and GSkill without any problems). The boards have been out long enough to ensure pretty good memory compatibility now.
