I have an asrock A780gxe128M motherboard paired with the AMD athlon x2 5050e CPU. Can I use ddr2 1066 (PC2 8500) memory. If not will the 1066 ram be backwards compatible at ddr2 800 (PC2 6400)? Thanks.

yes it should be backwards compatible.

the memory controller on am2 chips only goes to 800. you need an am2+ chip to go higher (something like a phenom, or athlon II or athlon 7000 series)

Thanks all for the responses. NewEgg has a special on 4 gigs of oz 1066 memory for $40 which I think I will buy. This way if I upgrade the cpu to am2+ in the future all is well.
