PC sound quality is dependant on speakers/headphones, sound card and whether or not your music is going through the Windows K-mixer, rather than on the program used to play it. That said, foobar2k is the easiest player I know of with which to set up a means of going around the K-mixer, which tends to muddy music up slightly, so it's going to get my vote here. Methods of going around it include ASIO and Kernel Streaming, the latter of which foobar2k natively supports. Afaik no other player supports either without requiring a plugin.

Sound quality depends more on hardware than player - right now I am impressed with Microsoft's Windows Media Center. It makes 8.0 and 8.1 come alive.

I think I am a bit of an odd-ball in that I have enjoyed Windows Media player for years. I really like the SRS WOW effects, the range of the equalizer, and sounds even better now that my desktop and laptop have the Dolby Home Theater 4.

I used Winamp years ago, but I always thought it was merely adequate.

For purely music, foobar2k with ASIO.

For use with a video player, I use Reclock plug-in (KS output) with my choice of media player (mpc-hc).

For audio/music on Windows, another vote for Foobar2000 with ASIO or WASAPI. You can pretty much customize it any way you want with no clutter like online store or media guide. Very minimalist design, launches and operates instantly.

Yep, Foobar2000 is the way to go for Windows. It's got better sound and playback is very stable. It also takes less than 1% CPU utilization. Just don't use the equalizer on that software as it's no good. Sound goes whacccckkkkkkyyyyyyyyy Use the built-in equalizer from your sound card if you have to.
