Go to a big department/furniture store. Just lay on a whole bunch and go with the one that feels good. I tried a bunch out and found:

$200-300 - crap. You can feel the springs jabbing into you.
$300-400 - better, but still kinda meh
$400-600 - best ones. Firm, yet soft.
$600-1000 - Pretty good. This is where they start to get that underpadding layer which I really don't like though.
$1000+ - I didn't like ANY of these. The underpadding was extremely thick and soft. It felt like the bed was trying to eat me.

Beware... mattresses have a higher markup than just about anything on the planet. (Doughnuts excepted.)

Once they take 50% off the marked price you're probably getting close to a fair deal.

yea, I used to work at a sears and the mattress dept people said all the mattresses sears sells has about 65-100% mark up. The pricing at sears is pretty comparable to other places so I assume the mark up is the same just about everywhere. My dad recently bought a new mattress for our guest room and it was able to get 20% off their sale price at sleep train...it took about 20min of negotiating though

I can remember a show I saw on TV once where the people went undercover and bought mattresses from local discount mattress discount stores. They would then cut the covers open to show that what they were told was a new mattress was a nasty, stained matress with a new cover on it. They were so nasty that if you let your dog sleep on it, the humane society would arrest you.

You have to go to the asian places. My mom's been buying mattresses at these places for years and they're VERY cheap, and quality seems to be fine. When i say cheap, i mean 200 dollars. :D

We prefer very firm beds, and the beds seem firm enough without having any "springs jabbing into you" :p

try the ikea mattresses, they're not too bad. I just bought a full mattress from them about a month ago, comfy enough for me.

Sleep Country has some pretty good deals on close-outs. After some haggling, they "found" me a good Sealy Posturepedic, an $1100 King-size mattress (no box), for under $600 over the weekend.

I dunno .. I'd prefer oral positive reviews to verbal positive reviews.

Have you checked the memory foam pillow thread in hot deals? It turns into a mattress thread too somewhere along the way.

Did you buy that bed from Eurway?
They do make good mattresses. They don't make them...they relabel some other big label. I like mine, it's really nice...

I have the top eurway mattresss. The pillowtop. It's really nice. If you don't have to have it delivered you're even in a better boat.
