What material Makes a good Antenna

A good conductor, e.g copper.
However, the efficieny of an antenna to 99% determined by its design, basically any material can be used as long as it is conducting.
 
You can try clipping a thin wire to the end of antenna but theres a lot more to it than that.

also is it the car or truck version? If its the car try a different channel. Also make sure you use fresh batteries, and dont use rechargeables.
