What makes tires blow in this manner?

Unfortunately I have no pics, but one of our rear tires went yesterday. It had 19k on it. It was somewhat worn, but not worn out. Pressure was within 1-2 PSI of spec.

The way it blew was the outter sidewall (i didn't look at the inside) had multiple blow-holes around it. So, as opposed to one hole, these multiple blow holes were evenly spaced around the outside of the sidewall - maybe an inch or two in size each.

Really need pics to tell for sure, but are there any punctures in the tread at all, or any evidence of prior puncture in the sidewalls?

has to be a manafacturing defect then. she would have known if she hit something.

Banging the tires into curbs will cause sidewall stress which will cause sidewall failure.

If you had nitto drag radials on the rear wheels of your car, the previous owner was a serious moron. ;)

That's what happens when you get cheap tires. Stop being a cheapskate and get some decent tires before you kill yourself or your wife. :p

I have hit a pothole and pinched the sidewall, causing a gash in the sidewall and a blowout, but what you describe would almost have to be a manufacturing defect. Have _all_ the tires changed on that car, I'd recommend Bridgestones.

There were not drag tires. They were put on all 4 wheels. I replaced the back ones with some michelins yesterday, but the front still has the nittos.

I have to emphasize the fact that it was not a single hole but evenly distributed around the entire tire's sidewall.

The belts in the sidewall seperated which caused the failure Skoorb.

OK :) So it was just a manufacturing defect freak occurance sort of thing...I suppose perhaps I should change the front tires, but I had to spend $310 on the two new rear ones yesterday :(

Those holes may hve been ground into the sidewall by the rim when it was driven on the flat.

I have nitto tires on my car right now, and no major complaints. They aren't as big as michelin, but they certainly aren't a "no name" brand. They're very popular with the boy racer ricer crowd, probably because they come in unusual sizes for reasonable prices.

As for multiple blow holes.. are you sure the tire didn't go flat, and then you continued to drive on it until it basically ripped? Sounds pretty unusual from what you described - and yes it's possible to drive around with a completely flat tire on a rear wheel, and not really notice it until something catestrophic happens.

Especially at highway speeds, my recollection is that tires are often trashed by the time you get to the side of the road ... ?

It is possible that that was the reason for the holes. Mrsskoorb said that she heard a bang sound from the back of the car. Then about 5 minutes later she heard another one. She knew then that the tire was flat, although she said that the car still drove perfectly and she couldn't notice. Nonetheless she pulled off and about 1/4 mile later pulled into a gas station and that's where the tire was changed.

That could explain the multiple holes. When the tire goes flat, the rim can start cutting into the tire. Hearing a noise like that, then driving another 5 miles will cause your tire to look funny ;)

I'm surprised that at a speed of 80 with a flat tire she'd have been unable to notice though that it was flat. Doesn't that sound funny? I have never driven more than a few miles per hour on a flat, but I always assumed that you'd notice pretty quickly if a tire was flat at high speeds!

what kind of car/truck?

Michelins are a good tire, but overpriced for me.

I like B.F.Goodrich,
{which was bought up by Michelin}

Not true. Right rear blew out on my '77 Town Car at about 80MPH, and the only reason I knew was because the carcass was flapping against the inner fender well!
