What makes the SiS 735 so great?

Why are people so excited about it? I'm reading Tom's article now... but is the single-chip north/southbridge that big a deal? Stability? Speed? Price? [shrug]

1. Outperforms everything until now
2. cheap
3. 1 chip means smaller PCB= even cheaper
4. it's not Via (although mine has been very kind to me)

My best guess -- It's a "crossbar" chipset just as nFORCE chipset is, bandwidth simultaneous access being doled out in predetermine assigned channels.

I agree with sugadaddy. It just outperforms every other DDR solution currently available. At least until NForce shows up.

Read the benchy's before asking questions. Pretty much Sugadaddy sums it up. The only thing that could keep 735 from domination is one product, nForce.

AND we know that is is going to perform well with the Palomino..

no-one knows what the performance would be like with Palomino + nForce, though we can hazard a guess as to what nForce + T-Bird would be like (about the same as SiS735 + Palomino methinks)..

Why pay for 2 chips, plus all that extra onboard stuff when I'm going to use cards instead?

Well actually the Nforce sounds like it'll fit my bill. If things go as predicted, I think Nforce might just be the king for a while when it comes to mobos. And if anyone's complaining about the integrated stuff, think of it like this: You don't have to pay for a sound car, and if you're like me, you'll be using the onboard graphics (for roughly 3-4 months), until Chrismtas time comes and we see a new graphic cards from Ati, Kyro, and maybe even Nvidia (Doubt it though)

It's great to see chipsets like Sis and Nforce for AMD :D. It's nice we'll have a choice between two great non-Via solutions. I'll go Nforce.

SiS is available now, nForce is still in development and could wind up being very late... pity the 735 didn't have onboard video of some kind - it'd be killer for a workstation. :)

besides nForce, the only thing that could stop it from being a success is SiS themselves, because of their small fab capabilities. I hope they're smart enough to have someone else make the chipsets if they don't have the necessary ressources.

I still haven't seen any SiS735 boards on sale yet.

You won't know for sure until the board gets here. So any assumptions now are pretty useless. But prelimanary numbers from ExtremeTech using a beta board with beta BIOS shows it hanging in with the best of the DDR boards. And that's with a BETA board and beta BIOS and BETA drivers.

<< I think I saw in another thread that PC-Chips has a production 735 motherboard out. >>

Isn't PC-Chips the Hyundai of motherboard manufacturers?

OK, the Pinto of motherboard models ;)

I had a pc with a PC-Chips mobo, once....compared to anything else offered for the P!!! chip, the board was very, very slow and had but one PCI slot (only AGP option was onboard (SiS 620)).

Just my opinion, but I would avoid any PC-Chips motherboards like the plague.

It is the old pinto that you see that is rusted out, has burn marks around the gas tank, smells like carbon monoxide and febreeze, and reaches a top speed of 35 mph. Get it now? :)

Heheh, yeah, it's like the pinto of mobos. :)

I've got a PCChips board in the system I built for my parents. It's not really that bad. (I mean, it's slow and all, but it manages to get the job done).

ok, the word "PC Chips" and ever varriant of it needs to be banned from this site... forever :p

I can't wait to see it all.. if the nforce ends up being cheaper, SiS may have a run for their money... mainly cause of their rep i think (and possibly the fab thing).
