I personally always run it in safemode, nothing is running to interfere it runs much quicker. Even network traffic can cause it to restart.

One of the most common causes of that is the swap file being accessed during the defragging by anything. All these comments regarding closing all TSRs and stuff while optimizing are valid. Any of them can cause that . . . often by using the swap file. Sometimes the defragger itself uses the swap file. That is one good reason for having the sswap file on a different drive or partition.

My suggestion may sound odd, but in my case doing a Ctrl-Alt-Del and shutting down the Ahqtp application, which is part of the SB Live! made my scandisk work correctly. It apears to be a SB Live! Configuration utility, and it should appear in the system tray as a soundcard with a speaker over it. I also notice you have a SB Live! so its at least worth a shot :cool:

Additionally, . . . if you must have your swap file on C: drive, then fix the size by making the max and min the same commensurate with the amount of real RAM you have. Don't let Windows manage your virtual memory. Take command! :)

So, someone who has 64 MB of RAM would set their virtual memory to 64 and someone with 512 would set it to 512? I am confused, please educate me.

You want your swap file size to be 2 or 3 times the amount of RAM. If you have 64MB of RAM, set your swap file somewhere between 128 and 192MB. Set both the minimum and maximum to the same number.

This is where I get confused, 2 - 3 times the size of your RAM. Wouldn't someone with 64 MB need more than a person with 512?
IE @ 3 X
64 = 192
512 = 1536

You don't want your computer to use the swap file if at all possible because it soo much slower. It's like overdraft protection. If your computer is continually accessing the swap file on the hard drive, you should buy more memory. Set the min and max of the swap file to 300 or 500 or whatever and be done with it.

Anit-virus program may also interrupt the scan too.
