I'd strongly suggest getting some kind of MPEG decoder card.
I have an ancient Creative DXR2 which easily outshines my Hercules GF2. The colour gradients are far superior and the image is much clearer too, plus the aspect actually fits a widescreen TV.
btw.. i'm currently using:
Pioneer 305S SCSI DVD
Creative DXR2
Videologic Sonic Fury (stereo only connected directly to TV)
Panasonic 28" 100Hz Widescreen on a S-VHS connect from the DXR2.
I find the TV speakers sufficient as the system is in a relatively small room.
