What makes an apple sour?

So the other day I bought three Golden Delicious apples from Safeway, and while the first one I had was very sweet, my second one, which looks identical, was sour and perhaps somewhat bitter as well. Is a sour apple rotten or bad in any other way? What makes one apple sour and another sweet, besides perhaps sugar content? Anyone familiar with this?
 
i have no expertise in apples, but maybe it's the lack of sugar from the ripening process? meaning, the apple is sour to begin with.

Sounds like someone injected cyanide into one of your apples. The only known antidote is to drink beer until you pass out. Repeat for 6 days. If you are stilll alive you have overcome the effects of the drug. Be thankful that a caring ATOTer was here to help you in your time of need.
