What makes a pistol not California legal?

Yes it is really messed up. I live here and it sucks for guns. Handguns are ok but try buying anything fun like a 9mm Carbine and it sucks. I still wish back in 1999 I would have bought a AR-15 receiver before the latest ban went into effect. I have a bunch of high-cap magazines that I bought before 2000 for a couple of my guns.

While I admit California's gun laws suck compared to other "free states", it isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. We've made great strides here within the last decade or so.

Gun owners have successfully challenged Californa's draconian gun laws and continue to do so. Five years ago, if you wanted an AR15, your only option was a FAB-10 or some other top loading joke of a device, unless you were a brave soul. Recent court cases have all but ruled Bullet Buttons legal. There's nothing sketchy at all now about having a BB installed rifle.

Even the "large capacity" magazine law is being challenged. The law only says that it is illegal to import, sell, gives or lend a "large capacity" magazine. No where does it say it is illegal to own or use one. In theory, some guy can drop a million "large capacity" magazines out of an airplane and it would be legal for us all to pick them up, keep and use them. That law, as written, is pretty weak and it's only a matter of time before it is successfully challenged. It's unenforceable.

Hell, even Sacramento county is now "shall issue" for CCW's. Five years ago that was unthinkable. After last year's elections I still thought it was unthinkable, but the new Sheriff actually made good on his quiet campaign promise and self defense is now good enough reason for a permit.

California gun laws may not be ideal, but IMHO it's a silly reason to not live here if you like the rest that Cali has to offer.

If I wanted to get a gun like in my OP, I can't get it brand new in a shop. I can get it used though via private party. Can I also get it new in another state then bring it back home with me? As the law is, you can't buy it new, but I can own it and carry it around just fine?

I live in Silicon Valley and I hear that concealed carry is impossible to get. So the only way to arm myself when I'm out and about is to wear it in plain sight to everyone, and freak everyone out and possibly get questioned by police?

YOU CAN BUY A RUGER SR9C FROM A GUN SHOP IT IS NOT OFF-ROSTER!

Whew. You can buy PPT, you cannot buy it in another state because you must be a resident of the state you purchase it in (unless you find a super shady FFL), you cannot carry around a gun concealed without a permit, you can carry open carry but it must be unloaded and the magazines must also be carried openly (not in pocket), you are liable to be questioned by police or even taken to the station although it is technically not legal.

Your right is technically that you do not have to subject to a "safety check" and you don't have to forfeit your ID, but most officers will do it anyways and you pretty much will have to allow them to. Open carry in CA is dangerous.

You can open carry if it's unloaded and if you're not within 1000 feet of a school.

Are you in Santa Clara county? The Calguns Foundation is suing them over their CCW policies at the moment so we should be able to all get CCWs within a couple of years at the latest.

I actually loved mine for the time I had it. Ended up selling it off to buy something else but I really enjoyed it. haven't shot the SR9C but may pick one up at some point.

If they arrest you for doing something 100% legal (open carry in CA with a unloaded pistol) then it's also a good way to make a lot of money in a lawsuit settlement.

In CA some dumbass legislators came up with the roster, so companies have to pay money to get their guns approved here in CA.

They also made a law saying handguns sold here have to have a magazine disconnect (cant pull trigger without magazine in gun) and a loaded chamber indicator. I cannot understand what good these two things do, unless you're an idiot anti-gun liberal and then they probably make perfect sense.

Edit: I should clarify, any new guns added to the list after 2003(?) are required to have the above items.

Mostly political statement. But, you can carry an unloaded handgun and a loaded magazine. It doesn't take long to insert a magazine into a mag well.
