Four of the five of the dentists I have known are sons of dentists and they pretty much took over the family business.

no offense, but why are dentists paid so much? It doesn't seem like dental school is particularly hard or being a dentist uses special skills/creativity that only a small fraction of the population has?

I was in my dentist's waiting room paging through the local city's magazine and stopped at an article on local rich dudes and their boats. This one retired dentist had this sweet ass converted fishing trawler that he takes all over the carribean. The guy looked like he was in his mid-fifties.

Exactly why. Because it's not seen as "completely necessary", people pay cash for it. As opposed to medicine, where people bitch if they have to pay a $2 co payment because it's their right to healthcare. For some reason, no one has a right to "clean teeth", if you want it, you pay for it.

My cousin was one year away from graduating and becoming a dentist and then he decided he didn't want to do that anymore.

He decided to major in journalism.

My dentist said he was a political science major. Since you can't do anything with that, he became a dentist.
