What makes a hard drive hot and what makes the noise.

Right now I am in a A++ Class, I asked a Cisco teacher and he wasnt sure as to what caused the heat. Is there really that much friction inside the Harddrive. I have a Seagate 32Gig, and its quite warm. Not very noisey, but noticable. What creates that cranking sound?

The heat is from the disk spinning anywhere from 5400 to 7200 times a minute.. That creates a ton of heat because of the friction of the ball bearings in the motor. The sounds you hear are a combination of that, as well as the heads moving back and forth to read the data. You should buy and old hard drive and just take it apart and hook it up, its neat to see.
