I'm looking to get a good monitor to play a few high end games, and was curious how to tell what monitor best serves for it's price. I mean is there a guide or certain specs that make some monitors the king of all monitors? I'm looking to spend under $200 and save as much as possible, I'd like to get something in the 19" range....

Games:
BF2
MoH
WoW
UT2k4

I bought a 19" Samsung SyncMaster 997 DF a few months ago for around $170.00 shipped.

Very nice monitor.

check price grabber or price watch for referb 21" + Trinitron tube monitors, pretty much anything that will do 1600x1200 or better and your good :)

I would also recommend a Refurbished Trinitron if you don't want to dish out the cash for something new. Should be lots of places that are reliable and there's really not a lot of risk with refurb monitors.

You can get a 21" Trinitron for very little cash. I'm very happy with the 21" I bought. It's labeled IBM, but that's okay :)

If you don't mind spending, then go with the NEC/Mitsubishi/Hitachi recommendations above. My last monitor was a 17" NEC and it was really nice. I just wanted something bigger for a change.

I shopped around a bit and found that the NEC/Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB was worth it (19" CRT). I then wanted to go dual so I got a Dell widescreen and now digital editing and surfing the web is unreal.

Wow. Its been a while since someone actually requested CRT advice.

Since the OP mentioned 19" I'd like to throw in my 2 cents.

I use a Philips 109B for my game machine. It maxes out at 1920x1440, which is a little high for a 19" monitor. Things look like crap at that resolution.
But, it does support 1280x1024@85Hz and 1600x1200@75Hz, which is pretty darn good.

Overall an excellent monitor. The only way I would ever upgrade it is if it dies, or I shell out the cash for something that runs at 2048x1536.
Apparently you can unlock Baldurs Gate 2 to run at that resolution.

(Oh, for reference it does 640x480 at 125Hz. Which is also pretty much useless.)

None taken, but you said it was a 2000 model and you bought it used a while ago.
Will he be able to get a hold of one these days?
