What makes a good citizen (i.e. what civic virtues should we be trying to develop)?

As the title states. A lot of people seem to be thinking (if not saying aloud) that America is going to hell in a handbasket. So, in a non-partisan sense, what civic virtues is the U.S. doing pretty well in, and what still needs some work?
