What make of hard drive is best?

Ive had a maxtor for about a year and a bit now, but I was just wondering which make is best/most reliable? Im thinking of buying a new one!
 
I'm mildly partial to WD, probably because they were on sale that day.

Out of ones I've broken:

1 WD
2 Seagate
1 Fujitsu
2 Maxtor
1 Quantum
3 IBM

So only one left that I can think of is Hitachi.....

IBM no longer makes hard drives. Their "deathstar" drives have been unrivaled in failure rate. (Drives otherwise known as "Deskstar")

IBM has since sold off their hard drive section to Hitachi who now produce some high performing drives with a low, acceptable failure rate.
 
Yeah those Deskstars or whatever the hell they're called died sad yet interesting deaths, just up and stopped working. The Seagates were the SAME model 80gb SATA drives, one was a replacement for the first, thus I do not recommend them at all. The Maxtors were older models, they still worked but couldn't be used for booting, and I have no idea why either. The one WD was used heavily for 4 years, so I don't blame it at all. As were the Quantum and Fujitsu drives, 5gb and 8.1gb respectively, used in an MP3 server back when MP3's were just becoming available.

IMO, I like WD, mostly cuz of the sales.

This is like asking what beer is the best but I'll bite. 😉

You will probably find that Seagate ranks very high, just not with me, but their customer service and RMA can't be beat! I've RMA'd 3 out of 5 and then moved to Samsung. I've got 2 or 3 and they have been perfect. I've also had decent luck with WD and even the dreaded Maxtor. I've got 3 Maxtors and one 80g has been runnign 24\7 for 3 years with zero problems, but hands down the Samsung has been the quietest. If I needed a new drive tonigt I would go with another Samsung.
 
I've had an IBM deskstar(deathstar) in my Intel system for 5 years straight and not a lick of problems. Maybe they had just a few models that were nasty but apparently I got a good one. Today I'm running nothing but Seagate in my new systems.
