My friend wants a pretty fast comp that'll be up to date for a long time. I've never built an intel-based system before, but because amd currently can't offer the performance he needs at a low enough price with low enough temps, I'm going to make it a p4. My top priorities for the mobo are low price, high stability, and generally a simple, well-designed board without any uneeded features or tweaks. I would like onboard nic, but it's not a requirement. Any suggestions that fit the bill?

EPOX 4G4A 845G for $93 would do ya.

I'm still also very partial to the EPOX 4BDA 845D board. Still one of the best P4DDR boards made. Search Pricewatch for it They can be had for ~ $75 or so.

I would recommend the Intel D845EBG2 Awesome Board , i think Google gear , newegg also has it , think it is about 118.00 @ googlegear. Read the Reviews before you buy anything , I MADE BIG MISTAKE on ga7vrxp Gigabite board after i bought it i read 38 BAD REVIEWS and believe me i got a bad one too . Personally i would not buy anything that has Via name near it , You can find articles out there that they released 333 chipset motherboards which had big problems , why do you think they came out with a kt400. Good luck onyour project!!

There's a fine board over on Computer Geeks - AOpen AX4TII - Intel 850 chipset - requires RDRAM - $41. +sandh. AOpen is well known for reliable mobos (and in my personal experience) - not very tweakable - hard to beat the price.
