What load balancing/channeling do server NICs do these days?

I haven't kept up on it.....what algorithym do server NICs use these days to determine what port to send frames/packets out of?

Is it even configurable or hardwired into the NIC?
 
HP/Compaq's NIC teaming can do load balancing based on IP and MAC, and it's configurable.
Hell, you can even configure the team to be Cisco Fast EtherChannel.
