What Linux version should I use?

I'm planning on giving away two computers with <5GB of HDD space each. What version of Linux should I put on them?

If they are old machines then Puppy Linux is a great one to try.

CPU doesn't really say much unless you're looking at something from the Celeron/K6 era or older. Memory is what you need to worry about.

Try TinyMe. Works nicely for me on a celeron 600 laptop with 256MB RAM and 10GB HDD.
