what lead to the demise of the dreamcast?

i've been wondering about it. was it the pirating? ps1 games were heavily 'backed-up", but it still did very well. can't be the graphics because it was superior compared to the competition. what was it that lead to the failure of the dreamcast?

Bad marketing, people not wanting to buy because of poor past products (i.e. sega cd, sega 32x, sega saturn (although I liked the saturn)). Also, you at least had to mod the ps1, the dreamcast could just play burned games straight.

i thought the controller sucked, hard to play streetfighter with the shoulder trigger buttons. i use an adaptor to use a playstation controller.

did'nt need a modchip. bad marketing.

it's to bad. it was a great system! still a great party system today.

Also in America they did not have EA's support for sports games (which is the #1 genre in the USA). Also not many must have 3rd party exclusive games, only 1st party ones. This is what caused Nintendo to fail on it's last 2 consoles.

Sega's history of sucking, poor marketing, and Sony fanboyism. Piracy wasn't as much of an issue as people say - if anything, it brought more people to the console.

Poor controller design
bad marketing
bad history + advent of other next gen consoles
easy to pirate games

besides the fact that Sega sucked?

Also the fact that sega stoped makeing games etc pretty dran quick. also to many crappy games.

sounds vaguely familiar to xbox...

but they didnt have $35 billion in cash sitting around!

It didn't have good third party game titles until it was too late. That's one big issue. Everyone expected it to tank and wouldn't jump on board, then Sega started to tank just as excellent games started to be released for it.

Also, the DC was given the image of a "cartoony" system, whereas the PSX was very realistic looking (despite the fact that their abilities were quite comparable.)

The DC was also a bit of a "too little, too late" scenerio. The PSX had been out for a while before it was introduced, the PS2 was only months away from being released when Sega announced the halt of the dreamcast.

I think they jumped a little too fast releasing the console. They did this with the Saturn too.

Too bad they died so soon, seeing how they're in the same generation as the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube, which are all doing fairly well.

Simple. PS2. They also just didnt have the 3rd party support. I owned one personally and really loved it. I thought it was awesome that they inculded a 56k modem. That was a big deal back then.

sony's marketing machine for the PS2, which made the DC seem obsolete to most people right when it came out. nevermind that you couldn't walk into a store and buy a PS2 until a year and a half later, and 2 years later the DC was still ahead in the number of great games.

The only Nintendo console to fail, ever, was the Virtual Boy.

You may be referring to popularity, or 'mind share'. 'Mind share' is nice, but businesses care more about profitability than anything else. No Nintendo console to date (save Virtual Boy) has failed to turn a profit.

Nintendo is the oldest video game company still alive, by far. Comparing it to Sega is like comparing Chevy or Ford to DMC.
