when Carson left "The Tonight Show", it died. The empty suits that tried to fill his shoes failed miserably.

Johnny Carson was the King of Late Night Comedy.

I remember watching The Tonight Show with Jack Parr when I was a kid...then Johnny took over...and it got funnier...I watched Carson on and off through the 60's and into high school, then as an adult, I rarely missed the show...even when I had to get up at 0 dark-thirty to be at work.

I was disappointed in the choice of Jay Leno as Carson's replacement, but not nearly as disappointed as I have been with Conan replacing Leno...

Everything on that show was brilliant. Doc Severinsen's spontaneous fill in music, Ed's laugh track...everything just worked. The reason it worked is because everything was unscripted. The stars ran the show, not the producers. Everything has to be formulated and homogenized now. It's really a shame.

Johnny was great. I did enjoy Leno and I like Conan and Letterman, but Carson was the best. I always loved when he did Art Fern and Floyd R. Turbo American. LOL

Looking at that clip reminded me of this skit from SNL where they were doing a spoof of Johnny's farewell show

I loved Johnny and Leno. Conan is ok, it's going to take him a year or so to adjust though (and for people to adjust to him).

Leno failed miserably? You don't have to like him, but you can't say the show was a miserable failure during his time there.

Nothing will ever replace Johnny + Ed. It was a perfect combination.
I would stay up late while in high school just to watch the show.

The animal segments were always great.

Wow, comedy pacing sure has changed since the old days. Audiences would have changed the channel a dozen times before the end of that that today.
