A coworker of mine is an avid Everquest 2 player and currently plays on a desktop system I built for him 6 months agao with the following specs:

Athlon 64 3200+
Chaintech VNF3-250 mobo
1 gig ram
Leadtek Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT 128 meg AGP video
etc etc

It is tax-free weekend here in NC this weekend and he is looking to buy a laptop so he can play the game when he travels, vacation, etc. With this being the case does anyone have any recommendations on what mobile video card/video solution (and other parts for that matter) should he AT MINIMUM be looking for to get similar performance? To be honest he doesn't have the game settings near optimal from what I am told; he notches them down because the rustling of the grass and ultra sharp detail are distracting in his words.

9800 if you can find one, both the x700 and 6600 are slower due to ram speed. A 6800go is quite alot quicker.

hm, maybe a benchmark link?

with a x700 and a 1,8Ghz P-m one should get about 6000-6500 points (seen these results in notebookforums user reviews) in 3dmark03 which is exactly what u would get with a Athlon XP 3200+ and a 98pro (had this rig myself back in the days).

Remember the mobility 9800 is x800 based so 256bit memory

x700

9800

6600

Now these use different cpu's but still you can see how much quicker 6600gt is than x700/6600 mobile cards

I have a Dell 9300 with the Go 6800 , 256 mb ram...I believe the X700 would be very similar in performance to the Go 6600.

For ATI MR X700 benchies, check out the Ferrari 4000 review:

NVIDIA Go 6800 in Dell 9300 review:

In regards to the ATI MR 9800: it is an 8-pipeline 256-bit GPU with up to 300MHz RAM & 300MHz core. The MR X700 is an 8-pipeline 128-bit GPU with up to 400MHz RAM & 360MHz core (partially due to smaller manufacturing process). The MR X800 is a 12-pipeline 256-bit GPU with up to 400MHz memory & 400MHz core. The MR 9800 was rare and I would challenge someone to find one out there today; Sager maybe?
