What kinda video card would be needed to run CS:S at 1680 x 1050 most everything maxed(other than AA)? Would a 6600GT cut it?

Just over a 6800GT and you would be able to do everything.

Found this bench and according to it even a 6600GT should get the job done. I myself don't need more than 40-60FPS. I think I will find something a little faster but I think a 6800GT or anything over that would be overkill. No HDR will be used.

I have 6800 oced to 400/800 and CS:S is unacceptably slow in dx9 mode (drops below 30 fps) even with everything turned all the way down. THe only way I can play it by forcing dx8 - still bad but at least not ALL the time (mostly localized to particular spots and/or >4 ppl on the screen). I would say play safe and get at least 7950GT or x1950 xt.

p.s. In all marks and such cards performs on par with what should be expected from my config -so this is not HW issue.

I used to run DoD:S on my Radeon 9600 vanilla @ 1280x1024 with pretty much maximum settings. I can't see why a 6600GT wouldn't do 1680x1050 0x/16x on a game based on the same engine.

Mainly becuase your 9600 does not fully support HDR. It will run much worse on SM2.0 than a SM3.0 Card.

If he wants everything maxed out besides AA then he should take a little step up to the 7600GT KO or a 7900GS KO if you plan to overclock. If not go to something higher without overclocking like the 7950GT of the x1950xt.

Doesn't Source do HDR on any card? It was a long, long time ago but I remember that DoD:S recommended HDR in the settings for my setup.

Probably offers Bloom HDR which is weak. By the way I changed what I said about the 9600..it supports it. Just not the better ways of HDR.
