What kind of virus could this be?

So this girl tells me a guy she's not in good terms with, IMs her..she replies, and all of a sudden her computer freezes up, she reboots, and can't start up Windows anymore..something along the lines of "Put in Disk" in her words.

Any ideas?

Are you sure she has the progression of events correctly in there and hasn't left out anything? You know, something like "downloaded 3 gigs of viruses to my computer, wiped my hard drive" or anything like that?

I've had people convinced that a strange spam e-mail is concurrently related to a physical hardware issue.

You can't get anything from just replying to an IM. She either directly connected with him, clicked on a link he provided, or something equally as stupid.
