8600gt would be something similar for older games. Newer games would work much better with 8600gt.

There's nothing "new" in the market in that speed right now. The HD3470 is an old product that is about 1/3 slower while the 8600/9500GT are about 15-40(respectively)% faster overall. The closest current gen card would be the 9500GT and that's around a third faster usually. Ati's new bottom end hasn't come out yet, the HD4270 isn't out yet but expect that to perform at about the Geforce 9500GT speed, maybe a little faster.

while an 8600gt or 9500gt is quite wimpy they are actually about twice as fast as the 7600gt in modern games.

Sorry mate, read it carefully next time. He said 9600GT, not 9800GT.

You are correct, and in any event, the 9600GT would obliterate the 7600GT, which was the original comment in this string.

From memory, a stock 8800GT is about 20% faster than a 9600GT, depending on settings sometimes more, sometimes less.

9600GT is maybe 10~20% slower than the 8800GT i believe.

Pretty much any low end card will blow doors off the 7600GT. The card had its time, but even a lowly 8600GT kills it.

Its quite shocking to see how fast times have changed! i still remember 6600GTs being the best bang per buck card ever.

bball, are you looking to replace a 7600GT or what is the question here?

Buy a $50 9600GSO (rebadged 8800GS) and it will blow the doors off a 7600GT (can be had even cheaper if you look around).
