What kind of video card should I use?

I thought I would pose this to the knowledgeable members of the forum. I picked up a PII 300 with 64MB of RAM but the video card kinda sucks. What kind of card would be a good match for this system. I figure something like a GeForce GTS is a bit over the top, but would I be better off with say a GeForce MX board or maybe a TNT Ultra board, or perhaps a Voodoo based board? Any input is appreciated!

I would hate to say it, but whatever you buy will not run at its potential power since your proceossor is slow.

I say pick up a voodoo 3 if you insist on upgrading the video card, other wise put the money toward a faster cpu.

Jonny made a very good suggestion.
The video cards today that are running so fast, they would be wasted on a slower system. The cards would be very cpu dependant at that speed. Go for a V3 3000 it will work very well on that speed cpu. The newer video cards wouldn't be much faster at all because they scale with the cpu's better.

But, you can find a GeForce 2 MX for only $120 shipped whereas a V3 3000 will cost you $85 shipped. Granted, that's a big $35 in favor of the V3, but since the GeForce scales so well, you'll want to keep it in your next system upgrade. Or even replace your current video card. The GeForce 2 MX is hands down the most bang for your buck IMO.

I would say a Geforce2 MX,when you do get round to upgrading your board, cpu, the Voodoo3 would be holding your new system back more then the Geforce2 MX would.

GeForce would be nice but the voodoo w/ rebate and discount = around 57 bucks..

Onvia has a 25 off 110 (onvia price), free shipping and $30 rebate... = 55, rebate ends this month

Argh, the V3 is out of stock at Onvia, oh well, thanks for the opinions, if I can find a good deal on a V3 card I'll probably pick one up, the MX board does sound nice, but I'm really not a super hard core gamer to begin with, and I'd rather save some money.

if u can find a Voodoo3/2000 for less than half the price of a GF2/MX

then get the v3/2000
no much diff if u get the 3000 so might as well get the 2000

i do not recommend getting Matrox G400/16MB SH since the Matrox runs realyl slow on a Non-SSE based comp (their drivers are SUPER-Optimised for SSE)

xtreme2k- The G400 works perfectly on ANY processor.

I used to run mine on my Celeron 300a before I got my Athlon. It runs flawlessly on both systems. I don't know where you got your information from, but it's wrong.

G400 is a great card. You can get them pretty inexpensively now, too. That's my recommendation.
