What kind of vehicle should I buy?

I know that I'm probably in for a lot of conflicting opinions on this topic, but what kind of vehicle do you folks think I should buy?

I need to be able to haul around at least 3 people with me (total 4), and I need some cargo room, to carry computers, luggage, etc.

I was thinking about Dodge Durangos, but they are rather expensive and fuel hungry. I don't really like cars, but I am sure that there would be some that fit the bill. I like trucks and SUVs a lot more than cars, but oh well. I'll live with a car if I need to.

I'd like a car that has less than 100,000 miles on it, and my maximum spending price is $10,000 (though the lower the better). Advice?

You could probably get a 96-98 Explorer for that much. The 4.0 (V6) powered versions weren't that much of a gas guzzler iirc. Other than a station wagon or a large sedan you don't seem to have much of a choice hauling 4 adults comfortably and have trunk room for computers and luggage.

Go to the GM BuyPower website and search for certified used vehicles. You'll have to click on one of the divisions, but after that just click the "Certified Used Vehicles" in the lower right-hand corner and search.

Some that may fit your bill are the Chevy Blazer, Chevy TrailBlazer, GMC Yukon, Oldsmobile Bravada, Buick Rendezvous, Pontiac Aztek, or Pontiac Vibe.

If you don't find what you want or don't want to go with GM, then check out CarSoup.com.

Well I've always been a Dodge guy... I've not liked Ford at all in the past. However, I just ran an autotrader search for Ford Explorers in my price and mileage range, and I came up with a whopping 400. Upon narrowing it down to my location (;)), there were still several. I think that the one I consider the best of the results is located at a dealership not far from me at all. It's a 1998, 4WD, 4 Door, $9988, 61366 miles. Think it's any good?

See it here.

Thanks!

Well you could get a Jeep Grand Cherokee or a Jeep Cherokee for around that same price, probably same year - made by Daimler Chrysler too. Explorers have held up quite well for everyone I know. The only bad thing I've heard about them is the whole exploding tire incident with Firestone, but that's not much of an issue anymore.

Anywayz, I've done more research on the Ford Explorer that I'm looking at. Experian shows a perfect VIN history, and it looks like it's in great condition. I called my parents and grandma... they are willing to help me buy the vehicle in event that I'm not financially able to do it myself, so I'm safe that way.

Anyone have any further comments on the Explorer? How prone are they to rollovers, even tho the Firestone tire issue has been all but eliminated?

They don't rollover, unless you are a moron and can't drive.

not worse than any other SUV. just keep your tires inflated right and you'll be fine. drivers making hard turns caused those rollovers more than anything else. you can't try to avoid an accident like you're driving a 5 series and expect the truck not to come up on 2 wheels. the other thing about high cg vehicles is that they can "trip" over barriers along the road, instead of bouncing off them.

No crap. I've never been in an accident (except for when I was broadsided, and there was no way I could prevent it). I am sure that I would be able to drive it right and without rollover, etc. I've lived on a farm for years, and although that doesn't mean a lot to some folks, to me it means that I've driven a lot of things, and know the right way to drive different vehicles. A transport bus doesn't exactly handle like a geo. Etc. I was only worried about their safety rating/rollover/etc in case a friend or family member or someone borrowed it (which I'm sure would happen at some point).

Don't worry about roll overs unless you're driving like a maniac and you try turning at 60mph when you're only supposed to go 20mph on a turn.
