anybody here drive to Alaska from the 48 states/or southern Canada ?

do i need a SUV? four wheel drive? pickup truck? normal car?
can a corvette make it?

are there motels and fast food along the way? or do i need a camper/trailer with extra fuel?

did you have fun? did you see any moosen along the way? how long did it take you? is 2 weeks enough time?

thanks

yes, a summer trip
well either early summer or later summer, i hate crowds, so i would try to do it either just before or just after the crowds/high season

I remember a feature in some automotive magazine (Road and Track maybe?) where a guy drove that in his restored Jag E-Type. I do remember it was in the summer, so if there's no snow, a Corvette could do it fine.

According to Mapquest, it will take you around 63 hours to drive from Missouri to Anchorage... I hope you like driving.

Sounds like a fun trip. I always fly to alaska. My friend did the trip by truck and took a ferry for about a day but can't remember if he had to or not.

go there between nov - april if you don't like crowds. driving to alaska is not the wise thing to do, you are going to drive about 2500 miles and majority part of this is in the middle of nowhere. I read it from the travel guide to alaska

Errm... You probably wouldn't want to drive it in a Corvette. But just about any well serviced vehicle will be fine. The Alaska Hwy has been improved over the years. It still has it's bad spots but the horrible quality of the road is more legend than reality.

I liken it to the Hana Hwy on Maui. It used to be a horror show but now it's not that bad.

Lots of roadside motels, diners and gas stations along the way. Not too many fast food places once you get past Whitehorse. But as long as you have money you won't starve.

Two weeks is pleanty of time. My grandparents drove from VA to AK in 8 days one time. You'll see all kinds of stuff. I'd be shocked if you didn't see LOTS of moose and sheep and other wildlife. I've driven from Fairbanks to Whitehorse several times. It's a nice drive. Lots of stuff to see. Be prepared to buy a new windshield when you're done through...

The touristas start showing up mid-May and stick around until early September. The best time to go (also the most crowded but oh well) is late June or early July... Solstice!

Crowded is a relative term though. Alaska and Canada are pretty big. We absorb the population pretty well. If you are driving at night you wont hit much traffic at all. Depending on which part of the state you're in (Seward Hwy, Parks Hwy are the worst) you might feel like killing someone in a land yacht if you try to drive from 10am - 4pm.

Anything with 4 wheels and in decent condition should be fine. Hell, you could probably do it on a motorcycle if you wanted.
