What kind of system do I need to run Battlefield 2?

I just saw a few teaser trailers of this game and its got me freaking out. I had already planned to purchase a new budget A64 system so that I could play HL2/CS:S exclusively, but now that I've seen the in-games for BF2 I think I'm prepared to put a little more into a system.

So, what kind of hardware do you guys recommend? I'm looking at about $800.

These are the official specs from EA:

The minimum spec is a Pentium 4 1.7GHz or equivalent, 512MB RAM and a 128MB video card.

P4 2.5GHz or equivalent, 1GB RAM and a 256MB video card the recommended spec.

Windows XP is required to play Battlefield 2 as is a DirectX 9.0b compatible sound card.

The specs I saw said a GF4 would not work - minimum Geforce card is an FX model. Something about shader support.

to the original poster: $800 should do fine, as long as you're able to re-use some older components (monitor, hard drive(s), case). shoot for an athlon64 3000+ winchester or venice core based system, you should be able to build something quality with that budget.

One of our BF2 clan members is going to use a 9800pro to play. I would just get an A64 3000+, AGP based mobo, 1gb of value RAM, good PSU, & the other stuff you need. Then you could slap that 9800pro you're selling into the mobo & get to killing folks. We're looking for clan members so if you want to join send me a PM, I already put up a thread in the Software section for the Clan as well.

BTW, I am selling my PCI-E 6600gt for only a few dollars more than you're selling the 9800pro for so if you want PCI-E you could get it.

That goesz for any of you, we are asking mature AT members to join our clan. The clan is made up of guys mostly over the age of 25 who like to play games regularly together. We've been together for years & would love to have you guys join up, here is the link to our website:

Xmen BF2 Clan website, forums link is in the top left & the home page has a cool BF2 trailer...WATCH OUT FOR THE M203!!!!

personally i would do exactly as smthmlk suggested and go nf4 and pci-e, for upgradeability

The EA engine is crap.

Knowing ea the graphics will be much worse than games like HL2 but require way more power.

Im in the 21cw tournament for desertcombat and I know people that went to E3 to play the game and to make deals with EA Games. They said it was visually stunning and never lagged or "rubber banded" like bf1942 and battlefield vietnam do.

what was the hardware? what do you mean by "rubber banded"

Yes, you can use onboard sound. There is no reason a game today wouldn't support onboard. Past BF games have been ram hogs and I would expect no less from BF2. Keep in mind to go no less than 1 gb of ram. BF2 might be one of the first games we see that might benefit slightly from having >1 gb.

You don't NEED a super-ultra-OMFGGOSU-high end system to run ANY games. You only need like $300+ video card to run games at really high resolutions that your monitor probably can't even support. Go with a nice midrange sub-$200 PCI-E card like a 6600GT, and that should be MORE than enough. I bet I could run Half Life 2 on the integrated 128MB Radeon 9000 chip in my laptop 😛

AMD 64
PCI-E mobo (for upgradeability)
6600 GT
1 gig RAM
Rest of parts from your current system

Seriously, for $800 you could get a good enough system.

I agree, except get a 6800 GT. They're close to $300 now, and will allow you play at the highest resolutions.
