what kind of surge protection/power conditioners are you guys using?

I've repurposed an APC UPS 725VA for my surge protection and power conditioner.
I think it works great, got an Onkyo NR1008 sitting behind it.

Works great, and added 0 additional cost since I already had it, and it was only sitting around.

There are also settings which you can set which supposedly regulate voltage fluctuation as in under 118v and over 122v and stabilize it back to 120v. Haven't actually tested it to see if it really works, but if it does work, it's a nice feature.

There were some crazy deals on PureAV stuff a few years back, I remember the reviews being pretty good for the money. I have everything running behind a rack-mount Panamax unit.

That part is called a MOV. They sell for 50 cents and there is 2 maybe 3 of them in 95% of all surge protectors. Add 2 50 cent capacitors and a $1 choke and that is your surge protector. About $3 in parts.

MOV begin to short out when the voltage gets near their rating. So if a surge comes through what they do is short the wires together absorbing the surge and converting it into heat. The problem is MOV burn out. The more surges they take the quicker they fail. All you need is a surge protector that has a light that tells you the protection is working so you know when the MOV has failed. Otherwise save your money. The $5 protector is just as good as the $20

Few years back Belkin were selling some old stock Surge Masters II for 3 dollars and change on their website. I bought 40 of them sold most for a small profit and still using the one left over but during bad storms everything still gets unplugged if I'm at home since lighting is really bad at hitting here.
