I'm in the process of gearing up to buy a new stereo. My budget will be about 2500, so hopefully that will get a nice receiver, DVD player and a good set of speakers.

Any suggestions?

What do you have?

What do you primarily listen to?

I think probably listen to 95% of my music in the car and the other 5% on my computer. I guess thats why I'm ready to get a real kick-ass stereo so I can hear my music in better quality.

In storage back home I have a classic Marantz receiver with a pair of Bic Venturi speakers, a TEAC reel-to-reel tape machine, and a Dual turntable. :) I miss it.

Denon AVR-3805, Paradigm Studio 100s, CC-570, ADP-470, LiteOn DVD player (for avi playback) while I wait for the Denon DVD-3910, Tempest DIY sub and DIY two-channel amp in the works. And then there's the HTPC.

I love finally being able to say that...too bad I'm not done yet :p

I think I've got ten stereos set up at the moment. The main one has Apogee Diva speakers, a Rowland model 2 amplifier, a Rowland Consummate three-box preamp, a Theta Data Gen III DAC, a Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck, a Sota Comet turntable, and stuff like that. I like the full-range ribbon Apogees a lot (I've also got a pair of Duettas on another stereo); I'm less fond of the hybrid models.

What to get depends a lot on your tastes; I don't really care a lot for gut-thumping bass except in the home theater and I tend to go for more "analytical" sounding systems. (I don't have any tube electronics in any of the stereos.) There's a lot of good stuff out there at any price point, but you have to listen to determine what you personally enjoy.

I have a Harmon Kardon AVR500 and a set of Klipsch RF3 main speakers and center channel with a 12" sub and Klipsch bookshelf rear speakers. The fronts are matched and the entire system sounds pretty good to me. I'm thinking of getting something else though. Don't know if I'm going to step up from the AVR500 to a newer HK or go with something else. You can bet that I'll research the heck out of it first though.

I just dropped $2500 on central air for my house so I don't think I'll be buying a new HT setup anytime soon.

I'm still in an apartment so I haven't bothered to put much into my HT setup -- just got an Onkyo 601 recvr, and have had Polk RT55 fronts and a $100 Sony DVD for awhile.

In my home office I have a $250 pioneer and a pair of Polk RT28's on my desk. Sound from an old Sony CD and my FLAC lossless jukebox server (800 rock/pop CDs, about 100 each Celtic, blues. I still have to rip my 300 or so classical) with Hercules GTXP for sound output.

Once I get around to buying a house in a couple of years I'll go crazy with the HT setup.

if its for a car 2500 will go a long way.

for home it won't get you very far. Do you want acceptible surround sound, or do you want decent two channel?

For home my 2 channel system is Martin Logan, aragon, sony SACD, adcom 750 pre-amp.

Used would be a really good avenue for you.

I listen primarily to jazz, techno and rock with some rap thrown in now and then.

I have an older kenwood receiver, 30 band eq, cd changer and a tape deck for the vintage goodness.
Going through some paradigm monitor 9's.

Then there is the other amp for the technics.

Just read your post...seems like you're going for surround.

A HK receiver and speakers of your choice (do you want loud or do you want smooth/good tone, you can't have both)

Any of the DVD audio/SACD combo players would be nice as well. a few hundred bucks for them.

I have a Yamaha 5660 Reciever
It's far from top of the line, but it has been a great reciever for me so far. (When I bough it it costed about $450 or so from onecall.com)

My front left and Right speakers are RTR 1530s
http://www.rtrspeakers.com/rtr.htm
They pack a LOT of bang for the buck, the sound quality is quite good, but for from perfect. They are similar in sound to Cerwin Vegas, but these are a tad louder sounding. These things are freiking huge (39" H x 17" W x11" D weight about 90 pounds each), so if space is a concern, than you do not want these. I paid under $300 for the pair (including shipping) but I forget where I bought these

My rear Left and Right spearkers are Sony bookshelfs .. I forget the exact model .. they were like 100 bucks at best buy or something .... far from high end, but good enough IMO for rear channel speakers. Better than most small satelites I've heard.

My center channel speaker is a kinda cheapy KLH that I bought 4 or 5 years ago, the sound is OK, but not so good. It was under $100.

My subwoofer (which is not necessary since the 1530s handle down to 33hz ) is also a cheapy KLH (100 watt, 8inch. Back before I bought my RTR speakers, it made a big difference for movies and stuff, but now the subwoofer is unnecessary)

One of these days I plan on purchasing either a good stereo amplifier for the RTRs, or 2 mono amps . The 100 or so watts the reciever puts out sounds good, but I think it would be better with 200 to 300 watts RMS.

I use my Stereo mostly for DVDs, and sometimes for CDs. Usually action/war movies and death metal.

1x 1970's vintage Sony reciever (found in parent attic)
1x Record player of the same era
2x Pioneer speakers of the same era
2x el cheapo speakers I got with my el cheapo stereo from target 5 years ago
1x decent sony boombox, connected to the reciever for use as a CD player. A discman would do just as well, but mine is broken.

Let me tell you, the bass that reciever will make is incredible. We are talking entire house shaking bass. And the looks of the 70's equipment totally rocks. Its all wood (real!) and polished metal, with big heavy knobs and switches you have to exert yourself to throw. My reciever, in other words, could beat up your reciever. When you open this baby up (i had to replace the volumn potentiometer), you see that it actually has a huge string pulley system inside of it! the tuning knob goes to a pulley, which splits, one strand goes parallel to the front of the unit and drags the frequency indicator back and forth, then goes through some pulleys back to the antenna where it actually changes the frequency, and then comes back around to the knob. And all this selector knobs use rack-and-pinion setups to do their business. Its absolutely fabulous!

edit: The only thing I would change is the CD player. I want one of those 100 disc changers or something. I might be able to buy one off my great aunt who had a nice stereo (audiophile) but got a bose acoustic wave thingy. I think she has one collecting dust.

nice!

You seriously are in desparate need of an amp though.

;)

<---have 3802. the 380x series are great, but not enough power to really drive those 100s.

an old 1986 model pioneer receiver.
it was a gift from my aunt about 14 years ago when she got a new one.

it got struck by lightning one night and now the remote makes the lights flicker and the volume go up to 10, its not a knob its buttons you push to control the volume.

so i put electrical tape over the remote sensor b/c my TV remote would do the same thing as the stereo remote and its still holding up alright.

i did notice the other night i got too close while talking on my cell phone and it had the same effect as the remote.

weird.

I bet you do! Watch out for your hearing though. I'm pretty sure you can push 115 dbs.

Now get a dang turntable for those beauties!
