They're all over, orange/brown, bushy tales, they hop across streets, climb trees and one in particular has eaten most or part of over 10 of my squash over the last couple weeks. What variety is this?

Squirrels are squirrels. There's tree squirrels and ground squirrels. Start spying on them. If they go in the ground they're ground squirrels. If they go in trees they're tree squirrels ;^)

red, and totally bold. I work on campus, and as usual, campus squirrels are the most approachable. I actually had one climb my leg the other day--without food. crazy,

The GF has managed to ..."adopt" one that wandered into our kitchen one day while we were cooking. she gives it nuts and sometimes leaves a few outside when we're away. The little punk sometimes waits around our door for us to return. it has a bent ear, so we know it's the same one--another showed up too. I think they're communicating. :hmm:

of course...they usually take the nuts and then tear up my GF's garden to bury them. :D

Yeah my grandpa used to hand-feed a particular one that always kept itself near the back porch.

Squirrels delightfully amuse my ADD. :D

Those arent squirrels. Those are the piles of un-shaved pubic hair from the femi-nazis, that have gotten so bad that they sprout legs.

I think you're mistaking Berkeley for the campuses of Sarah Lawrence/Vasser/Smith.

:hmm:

You are saying they're red squirrels? You work on "campus?" The UC Berkeley campus?

This squirrel is smart, very smart. It did a Houdini to escape my live squirrel trap, just bought on eBay, 16 x 6 x 6 inches. It definitely was in the trap and escaped. I think it's probably a red squirrel. I tried the live trap again, and the damned thing got the bait out of the trap without going inside. Masterful! I had peanut buttered the last 5" or so of a stick and set it into the trap from above. Hard to believe the rodent figured out how to get that stick out, but it did and ate all the PNB. I think it's probably the same squirrel that's been harassing me for 3 years or so, but he's getting better and better. He stopped hitting the rat traps I have out there (around 6, all baited with PN butter).

I deduced that the live trap isn't big enough. This is a BIG squirrel. I saw it again today and I think the nose to end of tail it's about 20-22 inches. The tail keeps the gate from closing on the trap and it somehow got out, either turning around inside or lifting its tail and backing out. I thought of returning the trap and ordering a bigger one but instead I modified the trap today, adding 10" to the length with some wire mesh I had lying around. I have it set now, and think this time I'm likely to get the ah heck. I'm going to let it out several miles from my house.

Why are you trapping it? If you get rid of this squirrel, he has 100 friends ready to take his place.

Not true. I grew Japanese pumpkins for several years in the same location and the squirrels didn't give them a 2nd look. Suddenly about 3 years ago a squirrel started munching on some. I tried scare crows (aluminum foil spinners) and that didn't help. Rat traps freaked them out and chased them away. Pretty effective. I think there's just one squirrel currently hitting the patch, but don't know for sure. The rat traps have stopped being hit, so it's learned not to touch them. I've been getting an average of over one pumpkin a day being chewed off the vine and partially if not largely eaten.
