i thought garter snakes were all black with a yellow ring shortly behind the head, hence the term garter?

Thats a black rat snake. We used to call them "black racers" when I was a kid cause they would actually come at you as a defense mechanism (but are still harmless).

They are good snakes, but get big as hell.

agreed - thats what I think it is too

And it is probably a very young snake. They get to be pretty huge.

nope, that's a ringneck. just as harmless as a garter. garters can vary in color but are usually greenish (sometimes grey, sometimes black)

They are good snakes - very good at controlling rodents and other things you don't want around your house. I believe that I have read that they will even kill and eat venomous snakes.

You're in Tennessee so you have the same snakes we have here in NC. Ton's of Copperheads and Black Snakes. I've seen the Black Racers 6 feet long. they really are massive as adults, and very intimidating, but very good snakes to have around.

And plane threads too.

kinda looks like a black rat snake.

That's what I think too. Just leave it alone - they are harmless to humans and not particularly aggressive. It'll keep the rodent population down.

Hmmm...can they live in MA....I have a rodent porblem in my kitchen......
