What kind of Resolutions does DVD display?

The reason i ask is that i got a crappy monitor that does only 1078*726 (or what ever is closest to that) and i was wondering whether i should wait till i get a better monitor before i buy a DVD rom.

Your monitor will be fine for that. I'm not sure on the correct resolution, it may even be somewhere around 720x500 (is that even right???), but I'm pretty sure it's not as high as 1078x726, because it's scaled up to fit that resolution.

Also considering my system (below + Creative labs 5.1 Home theater), do i need some sort of decoder card or something? i just want to make sure that i get clear, crisp picture (with good FPS) and 5.1 sound.

thanx

That's actually a good question Akaz1976. I'm not sure if you would need a decoder card or not. With a P3 700 and the GTS, that is more than powerful enough to do DVD decoding in software. I would say not to worry about a decoder card, the DVD drive you buy will have everything included that you need. Put it this way, my P2 350 and ATI Rage Pro Turbo from back in the day handled DVDs great in software, with no decoder card.

Native DVD resolution is 720x480, but your computer will scale it to whatever you are using.

You don't need a decoder card.

Get whatever DVD drive is less expensive.

My $0.02

It will NOT. I have never yet seen a DVD drive that came with DVD software. So you will need to either buy some DVD playing software, or find somewhere to DL the software.

BTW I'd suggest Cinemaster w/ DVDGenie

I'm using a GF2MX w/ TVout on my TBird 750. No decoder card. It plays perfectly. I actually went out and bought a new $200 VCR because my old one didn't have svideo in and the svideo-composite converter really made the image crappy. I just got a 5.1 SBLive, and am researching speakers.

office boy my Pioneer 16x DVD (retail packaged as I/O Magic) came with PowerDVD 2.55. I would bet that any "retail" packaged DVD drive comes with DVD playing software. OEM/white/brown box is of course another story. But I got my drive for the same price as OEM when Best Buy had them on sale.

Doh... I should have thought of that, I almost always buy white box/OEM.
Anyway, I did get some software once with my V3, but it's would only work with Win98 (I use W2K)
