i have this 256mb pc100 dimm. ANyways i've only tried it on 2 systems. one was amd750 based slot a and it crashed all the time.

Oddly the only other system was an ancient celeron 333 with a EX chipset. It worked great in that. i didnt even know EX chipset supported 256mb dimms. Anyways, i need to use this in a VIA mvp4 , think it'll work? and is this some sort of strange 256mb dimm that it works in EX chipset. i've heard something about low and high density 256mb dimms, but not exactly sure what it meant

Time to push one of the new FAQs:

What is high density SDRAM?

The EX chipset is essentially the same as the LX chipset (with certain features removed). It also has the same RAM restrictions as the BX chipset (although the EX chipset supports 256MB maximum).
