<< I have a HP 1220. Text is great. Images are dark, but I haven't tweaked settings much. You probably will want extra memory to keep print speed up. The scanner imports well into Acrobat. The biggest problem I see with it is the paper feed tray guides only touch at the center of the page, so it is easy to skew the prints if you aren't carefull when loading paper. >>

How good is the scanner? Would it be worth the $120 to convert my HP LJ 1200 to a 1220? Or should I just buy a regular $150 scanner?

Several Epson Stylus color 740s, and a lexmark z51. - I wouldn't buy either again.

The epson 740 is slow, noisy, has very poor text output, drinks ink like it's going out of fashion and is plaqued by continual blocked nozzles and ink blots on the back of print outs. It does however have beautiful photo output, some of the best I've seen.

The lexmark Z51 is quiet, but has a bad paper feed and tendency to jam. Photo quality is poor, but text is outstanding. Finally, it has absolutely diabolical drivers - easily the worst I've ever seen; they don't work at all with my KT7-RAID based system, and have very high CPU usage on parallel, and unbelieveably crash-prone USB support on my Intel systems.

I didn't realize Epson 740 is actually that popular among us. Text quality is alright but the photo quality is nice for that price.

My roomate is using a 1280 and that is the best printer I have ever seen. If you don't have to print anything bigger than letter size, simply go with the 880. Same everything but smaller.

Lexmark Z11 only $59 at walmart over a year and a half ago and still going strong (albeit slow...)

Lexmark Z42 only $69 at costco a few months back, much faster than the Z11 and very nice print quality. Prints great photos on the expensive paper. we love ours!

The HP 1220 scanner is only 600 DPI I think, you can get a better color scanner for a little more. The HP scanner will autofeed, which is nice. I bought it because I wanted to be able to copy expense reports and tax stuff easily. I also own an Epson 1240U which is better for quality work. I would say the scanner is fine for buisiness/ record keeping but not for photo work.

I have a HP LazerJet 4050N and a HP DeskJet 890C Pro.

The 4050N flies, it really is a nice Lazer Printer. It was only a few months old when I got it and paid £175 for it. In the UK it's a £1,200 printer. Shame it's not colour.

The 890C is a good printer, the colour is ok, for a cheap printer but I really hate the loading tray mechanism as it doesn't pick up paper very well, particularly when the tray is full of paper....seems tacky to me. But, saying that it's OK.

Got my NEC 870 laser for $99 from ValueAmerica back in the day. Well, I actually killed that one (hit by lightning maybe?), so I got a replacement from NEC (refurb). Paid $50 to ship my original back, but it's been going strong for 2+ years now.

<< I have a Lexmark Z22. Not bad for a $50 printer- great print quality, but pretty slow like someone else said. But for $50, you can't expect much else. The text is real sharp, and the color is great too. It runs through black ink pretty fast, but I bought a refill kit so its not a problem. I don't print much, so its good for me... >>

That's exactly what I'm saying, printers by HP or Canon or other brand that can do 1200x1200dpi cost more than 100 bucks.

I didn't read this whole thread so I'm sorry if this was already mentioned.
The first guy seemed like he needed a printer.

there's a $30 rebate on the HP 842C. You can put together a deal to PM (www.pricewatch.com) to staples.com adn use a coupon and get the rebate, and probably get it less than $70?
I dunno- just guessing.

I own a Canon inkjet, and Epson Photo, BTW

I've got a Lexmark 3200 that I've had for a couple of years already and it works great for me. (sorry iNo712) I would recommend anything in the Lexmark line.

Edit:
Their new line is the Z series so the similar model would be the Z32. I use the Z52 at work as well and it is excellent.
