What kind of phone do I need to get service in Vietnam?

Heading over to the motherland in a few months, and wanted to see if I can pick up a cheap phone on eBay for my mom and me for when we're over there.. And since I'm probably going to just toss it when I return over here, the cheaper, simpler, the better.

Why not buy a prepaid phone when you get there... probably easier than determining what they use.

OTOH, if they use GSM, get a GSM phone and buy a prepaid SIM card when you get there.

 

A waterproof one. Isn't autumn the monsoon season there?
