Look in the manual.

Definately some sort of motorcycle oil though.

10w-40 is the same as 10-w30(car oil) except that it doesn?t loose viscosity at high temps, since motorcycles run at higher temps 10w-40 doesn?t loose viscosity. go buy the oil from a shop that sells recreational vehicles and ask them so it *shouldnt* hust if you use 10w40

I believe Yamaha recommends 20W-40 for summer and 10W-30 for winter.

Uh, I am sorry, but 10W-40 motorcycle oil is not the same as 10W-30 car oil. 10W-40 is 10W-40 and 10W-30 is 10W-30.

Motorcycle oils and car oils aren't the same. Don't use regular car engine oil in your bike.

Umm, I've been using 10W40 Mobil 1 in my CB450SC for years without problems. What possible reason can you give for not using regular car oil? (I'll also note that the manual for my CB450SC does not make any reference to "car" vs "motorcycle" oil.)

Well.. I can't really give any. :p I guess there's nothing wrong with doing it. It probably depends on the application, too. I honestly don't know much about motorcycles. I do know that "Motorcycle" oils are formulated differently than normal oils though. Again, depending on the application, they have more "last resort" metals, and often have no friction modifier additives due to wet clutches. Do all motorcycles use wet clutches? Any bike that does, shouldn't have normal car engine oil used in it.

I guess I shouldn't have been so strong with my words. Finding the manual would be the best. Ask someone who has the same bike.

The clutch. The lubricants that are great for car engines suck for motorcycle clutches. Now by happy coincidence there seems to be one exception to that, and guess what that is? Yep, mobile1. There is a special mobille 1 for bikes, but it has long been rumored that they are in fact the same oil. Who knows?

As far as your manual goes, once motorcycle oil and car oil were the same. If you look at the ratings and newer manuals, you find that the superslippery ones (cant remember the SAE designation off the top of my head) are the ones to avoid. Simply put, the oil in question most likely either did not exist, or were not recognized as a problem when it was written.

Ah. I've just been using regular Mobil 1 automotive oil. No clutch-slip that I've found at all.
