Is MTV a good example of this phenomenon? MTV came along with the music of the '80s, and it was a great synergy. I like a lot of the groups and tunes that came from that period. Many quality albums as well. It could be that MTV now reflects the current state of music. I don't care to watch it, anymore than I care to listen to most of what's new in music. Here's another fine example...

Heavy metal, death metal, black metal, thrash metal, metalcore, classic rock, oldies, acoustic rock, pop, country, a little bit of rap, hip-hop, r&b, classical, jazz, soft rock, punk, emo, new age, klezmer, polka, hmmm, is there anything I forgot?

Perhaps it would have been easier to say "everything but techno/electronic" and there are even a few songs that fit that category that I like.

Metal, Classic Rock, Blues, Country (before it became pop).

Pretty much anything but R&B (don't understand the B part, there is no blues in todays R&B) and Rap.

Everything pretty much. Rock (Classic, Metal, Alternative, etc. etc.), some country, some jazz, some classical, some blues, and occasionally I find a rap song I like, though they are few and far between.

Ornery, I have that playlist sample in my collection too.
For me, the first major album by a group is often the best they'll ever do.
I like Elton John well enough, but the stuff in beloved patriot Chateau defines it for me. Everything after that was just OK.

Well, I used to be more into the hard rock/metal stuff, and still am to a certain extent (my 3 favorite bands haven't changed from Metallica, Sevendust, and Guns n' Roses in a long time), but my tastes have mellowed a lot in the past year or so. I've been listening to a lot more indie-type stuff recently, even though I still listen to the heavier stuff from time to time. And pretty much the only thing I won't listen to is rap.

Classical, biz0tch!

Although I typically like things from the romantic period - Chopin, Beethoven, Schumann, etc.

I play clasical piano and violin, so I'm familiar with repertoire for those instruments.

Edit: Add J-Pop cuz wife listens to it.

I think there are at least one or two acts in every genre that have something enjoyable. Country and Rap, etc, you just have to look harder.

Currently I'm really digging alot of the new folk/indie/alternative stuff that's come into it's own in the last couple years, like:

Elf Power
Sufjan Stevens
The Arcade Fire

of course I'll always listen to the greats like John Prine, Johnny Cash, Townes van Zandt, Guy Clark, and of course, big Bobby Zimmerman :)

I'm not sure what a "Playlist Sample" is. That was a list compiled for this topic. No sense letting it go to waste!

I just mentioned Yellow Brick Road, because it's a classic album, tasty from beginning to end. I don't own anything he did, other than that album.

Can't say the same for most of my other favorite artists. I'd have trouble picking my favorite albums from Bowie, Talking Heads, Eno, Roxy Music, or Pink Floyd. I like a LOT of tunes from the '80s, but many of those were one hit wonders, and not so great albums with one or two good songs on each. The best quality groups to come from that era, was REM and Dire Straits (late 70's). It's been pretty slim pickin's since then!

I use to be somewhat of a fan of Bob Dylan until I saw him live. In my 30+ years of attending concerts that had to be the worse show/performance I had ever had the displeasure of witnessing

Would you consider Beethoven a Romanticist? He was something of a transitionalist to be certain, but much of his works (especially early works) were very classical, and very Mozartian in their representation.

Regardless, I love just about all things Beethoven.

Classical and new age are by far my favorites. After that is the bulk of all other music except country, hip hop & rap, which I mostly despise (though each has a few songs I enjoy).

When did you see him? his live performances have an odd trend of being strongest around the middle of a decade, and pretty much sucking for everyone except the hardcore fans towards the end of a decade.

The famous "judas" performance was 1966+
His first "I hate being famous" spat was the end of the 60s -
rolling thunder was 1976+
"Another new religion" was late 70s -
the 1984 tour was awesome +
late 80s tours (dylan & the dead), he was totally burnt out -
didn't do much in the early-mid 90s, but late 90s tours started speculation he was dying of AIDS - (I saw one of these and really enjoyed it, but it was nothing compared to the tapes of RT & earlier shows)
early 2000 tours were really, really good. different, but really good. (saw a few of these)

He likes to change things up alot these days live. people go and expect it to sound like it does on blonde on blonde, and get pissy when it doesn't. It's tough for them to accept that he's not who he was back then, he has a different band, it's more bluesy, etc.
