What kind of modems does Time Warner use?

I'm trying to decide if I should buy the Motorola Surfboard at Circuit City. It's what I have with my current provider, but I don't want to buy one if I'll have to rent something else when TW moves in. Thanks.

modems? technically, those aren't modems

"an electronic device the converts computer signals into an analog signals in order to transmit data over a telephone line."

"Short for modulator/demodulator. A communications device that converts one form of a signal to another that is suitable for transmission over communication circuits, typically from digital to analog and then from analog to digital."

Actually, they are modems because they convert signals from one form to another, just like your second definition says. See the "How They Work" heading a bit down. It's a funny article actually, talking about the future of broadband in 1996.

Anyway, so the Surfboard should work with Time Warner? The reason I'm hesitant is because I have a USR cable MODEM ( 😀 ) from the early days of broadband, and it doesn't work on anything these days (used it on Cox, I think).

I used to have Time Warner with my own Surfboard.

That modem used to be great back in the day before cable companies smartened up 🙂
(no I didn't steal anything, just fun to hack around with)

I have Road Runner in Dayton, Ohio - they use a simple upright black Motorola modem (I'm at work so I not absolutely sure). The rental fee must be included in the monthly service charge because there isn't a charge on the TW bill for the modem.
