In a nutshell, DDR performance becomes more obvious as the cpu clock speeds get higher. At first, there was the argument that the performance gap between DDR and SDRAM was minimal. But that was when mainstream cpu's were just hitting the 1GHz range. Take a look at the benchmarks now, and you can clearly see that with cpu's around the 2GHz range, the performance gap is huge! With the high clock speeds available today, SDRAM is totally left in the dust, and even RDRAM is making a slight comeback too.
As for the memory prices... well, the bottom was around the Nov/early Dec. range. Since then, prices have actually doubled or more. Nonetheless, the price gap is small between DDR and SDRAM.... go for DDR.
