topic summary sais it all, im planning on buying a refurbished macbook and upgrading its memory from 2x256.

im thinking of just buying 1 gb stick and adding a second later when i have more money but i heard dual channel mode give a huge gain in performance.

also im thinking that the brand or exact type of memory that im going to buy might not be around and might end up having to buy 2 new sticks cause mixing different brand rams has problems alot of times.

what do u guys think ? should i get 2x512? or should i just get 2x1gb and get it over with

Before buying any memory, wait to see what comes with your MacBook. Sometimes they come with more memory than described.

Get the 2 x 1GB. It will serve you well.

Do not get 2 x 512MB. You will just end up throwing those chips away, because they will have absolutely no resale value. I would buy 1 x 1GB before buying 2 x 512MB.

i think im gonna get that one but i wanted to make sure since my macbook is a first generation one (i think) that everything will work fine

thanks thestu, you're always very helpful.

Would you actually notice a difference between any of these sticks? I do cpu intensive music production/synthesis and every bit counts for me.

Transcend is decent. One of the sticks in my MacBook Pro is Transcend, and I haven't had any issues with it.
