what kind of light do I look for for picture taking?

I want to take pictures of some objects, but the pics don't turn out well with a regular lamp. It made the wall look light brown in the photo and it causes light spots on the object making it fade in some areas. So what's an inexpensive way to do this? Is there a certain light bulb I should be looking for and where could I get a bright white back-drop?
