What kind of lawyer do I look for this?

1. Drove on suspended license.
2. Got caught.
3. Cop was nice enough not to arrest me but just towed my car.
4. About a month later, I am in due in court for arraignment. (This is past appeal, which I didn't do)

Yes, I've already admitted it was my dumbass mistake in previous threads. Now, what kind of lawyer do I look for a case like this? How much am I tentatively looking at for lawyer fee + applicable court fine? I hear first offense on getting caught on suspended license is usually a slap on the wrist with $200~ fine....

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

i dont think youd need a lawyer if thats all there is to the story. just pay any fines/tickets you may have, and admit to the judge what a "dumbass" you were. he should just fine you, maybe a lecture, and youll be on your way.

would probably depend on why it was suspended in the first place. im guessing failure to pay a ticket?

There are lawyers that specialize in traffic cases, and there should be many of them advertised in your phone book. Other than that, you could try your local legal aid society. I used to volunteer at my university's student legal aid center and they had a lot of traffic cases.

ject, it will be pretty bad and here's why.

you had to do something to get your license suspended (too many tickets, hit someone, et cetera...) and then got caught driving on suspended license. that willful disobedience of the law and is sheer stupidity (to get caught i mean) so a harsh penalty shouldn't be unexpected.

In the end, expect some time in the pokie but you'll probably only get a minimal fine ($500-$3000) and probation (100-1000) hrs.

No professional expertise but rather common sense.

really depends on the judge and his prior record. i was busted driving on a suspeded license once. had a ticket in alabama, blew it off (young and dumb), was pulled over for a tail light that had went out, and learned my license was suspended. i had moved before i got any warnings, etc. so they had been sent to my old address. i paid the ticket and got all my papers in order before my court date.

$50 fine, paid court costs (around $75, cant remember exactly), and got my license back. whether or not the judge "throws the book" depends a lot on your record, how prepared you are in front of the judge, and your attitude. in my case anyway. this was in fl.

that's a misdemeanor in Michigan,
200 dollar fine + points + it goes on your record. Unless they have a real reason to put you away, you'll only be paying money for this.

Please tell us what it was suspended for in the first place. It is a huge problem if it were for a dui or the like.
Edit:
But then again if it were suspended for a dui you would probably be in jail waiting for the trial.

Lawyers are wastes of money. Just go into court, say that you are sorry, show remorse, and take what he gives you.

So uh... are you going to keep driving on the suspended license? (which will probably be suspended for even longer now)

Are these tickets paid in full? Have you gone to a better drivers class or the like? Showing that you have taken steps on fixing the problem will show the judge that you deserve to be let off with a smaller penalty.

But as far as a lawyer goes... I don't think you need one.

Incorrect. At least in IL. I know someone that has a suspended license for his second dui in something like 2 years. He never spent time in jail (except for the initial arrest). I know he has paid a crapload of money for fines, attorneys's fees, court costs, etc. I never did find out how long he is out of a license though. Something like a year plus.

FL jails you until trial? Wow that is harsh.
I bailed my friend out the first time. He was only in over night (happened at 2 am or something). Second time I wasn't around when he got busted, but I think he was only in overnight again.

I don't think any state could hold you without bail after arraignment for DUI or driving on a suspended license... that seems like it would be unconstitutional. But then I'm not a lawyer or a Floridian :)

I thought it was implicit in his question, sorry :)
