What kind of jobs does a Software Engineer get?

My major is SE but i have absolutly no idea what a SE does now that i think about it. What types of jobs do they get?

Software engineers aren't 'real' engineers, are they? Do they have to take the FE / PE? If not, why do they get to call themselves (and get the respect of) engineers, but not have to take on the liability of an engineer?

I interned at a company doing Java and C++, and a bit of HTML. A good bit of Solaris configuration and scripting too. The job I start in May is coding in C/C++ and ADA.

For the most part, you'kll be doing design, coding, paperwork, testing, and going to meetings. It seems you have to be a senior SE or a project lead before you start handing the coding off to other people.

Hmm... The Software Engineering class for my CS degree was nothing but documentation and project lifecycle methodology.

Waterfalls here you come...

I hated that class more than my 'Water, where it comes from and how to keep it clean' class. Gotta love filler classes...

SE is an entire five year major here.

Have you done any internships or started a job yet? The documentation and product lifecycle stuff is actually used quite a bit.

well, I don't mind the questions you see around here. I can understand laziness very well or just convenience. The principle I'm struggling with is if you have to ask what so-and-so does, why would you commit 4 years or more of education towards it? Isn't this why people end up hating their jobs so much?
