I am considering majoring in criminal justice to become a police officer.

I really enjoy the courses that I have taken in college (like 5 so far just cause I thought it was interesting and might want to become a cop) and think I would enjoy the job and it pays pretty well.

But I smoked pot a few times in HS and got a ticket for MIP of alcohol when I was 18.

So considering that, plus the fact that I know a couple of people who just got rejected from being a police officer (one cause he would fail the psychological exam, the other cause he blew out his knee). I dont want to get screwed lol

But is there good jobs out there if your reasonably smart, articulate, and have a college degree with an irrelevant major??

dunno anything about what they look at when you apply to become a cop but how would they know you smoked pot in HS?

apparently, they do. Lol.

I know that they do interviews with people. And a couple of people I am friends with have gotten arrested for having some pot. I do live in a small town. Maybe they will find out, maybe they wont. I have no idea. My question is still pretty much the same cause it can be any number of things that can screw you out of a law enforcement job

I could be wrong, but I don't think that majoring in Crim Justice will help you get a cop job. If I were you, I would major in business or psychology or something and then take a minor in Crim Justice.

A lot of employers will look down on a Crim Justice degree, but most police agencies will not look down on a psych degree.

I work in a technical environment where our managers have to have some form of previosu technical experience. That being said, my boss has a masters degree in Theology. Talk about irrelevant.

10% of getting a job is a degree, the other 90% is networking.

Simple. If you want to be a cop, just drop out of school. Remember a few years back in New London (or maybe it was Groton?) Connecticut when the cop was refused admittance to the academy b/c he scored too high on the aptitude test? I don't think the pot matters; if anything, it gives you a little knowledge that will help you on the streets.

Dude back in highschool, a few years older than me, is a parol officer--started as a cop. He did that ****** in highschool, was a general douchebag all-around. Always trying to be accepted, he was. So...if you're an asshole, your friends don't respect you behind your back, and you're not too bright, then you could be a cop!

(I don't necessarily mean to insult cops--I have tons of respect for the difficult, often thankless job that they do. I'm just giving you my experience. I'm sure others have different exposure...)

That sounds smart. I'm sure you can still be a cop with only a minor.

Seriously though, I know a kid who screwed around with drugs and stuff in high school and is now part of the LAPD.

If you did that, just don't lie about it in your interviews. If you tell them that it happened and it was a long time ago and you are way past that phase, it will be no issue.

The biggest druggie/drug dealer in my high school graduating class is now one of the highest ranking DEA cops in my state.

True that. I actually was looking over stuff and looked into minoring in Criminal justice. Turns out i would only have to take 4 more classes so I am just gonna do that. Like someone said it should be enough considering that you dont even have to go to college to become a cop.

I think I am gonna major is economics cause that can be used for just about any job so its my fall back.

I've got a few degrees in electrical engineering. It's been three years since I left school, and I'm just about sick of it.

My plan is to move to Cambodia and to farm sheep. I'll graze them on land that no one else finds suitable due to land mines, and I'll sell the land at a premium once the sheep have "found" all the mines.

Dual income, never cold, Angelina Jolie, cheap living, a malnourished population of tiny Asian women at my disposal, and the sheep as back-up in case I still can't get any. How can I go wrong??

My future career path make my EE degrees superfluous.

They are probably only going to be concerned with recent drug use and/or felonies.

You, my friend, are my hero. Don't forget to grow your own smoke on your land. Just don't let the sheep eat it.

its been like 4 years since you smoked pot? heavy smokers have it in there system a max of 90 days, thats what is detectable anyways. scientists have reason to believe THC stays in your system forever and are unsure. all they know is what is detectable. that shouldnt be a problem unless you got busted for possession, which in a lot of places (like Maine) is a civil offense and not a crime. as long as it wasn't OUI I don't think it will be a problem.
