What kind of job do you need to get your own apartment?

Can I work at part time and still get my own apartment while going to school or is that unlikely?

You can, but they tend to involve not-so-fun duties like busting parties and enforcing lease provisions.

Oh, nevermind, I thought you meant getting an apartment by working at the apartment complex. Nevermind.

I've known several people who've been able to work twenty hours a week and pay for rent, but they have to live very frugally, can't eat out much, etc.

depends on where you go to school. I'd say you could get by with $500 a month in most areas if you lived extremly frugal

I don't want to end up later sharing a small apartment with 8 people or anything like that.

My friends who are rich have their parents buy them a new car and pay for their housing and sh*t. Lucky bastards.

Not likely.

Welcome to real life. Yes, it sucks.

I had to work 75+ hours per week at McDonald's to swing an apartment by myself. I still couldn't really make it.

Ok, nobody really stays in dorm for four years correct? They all move out later because the dorms actually suck (most of the time).

ramen > McD's $1 menu.

$1 worth of ramen can easily provide enough food for a week -- even more if you only eat one meal a day :)

for variety, during my brokeass college days, I alternated between ramen and rice (flavored with bullion).

as a good guide, assuming you don't mind living frugally, a rent that takes up 50% of your monthly wages is do-able. You can push it a little higher, but you might also be running the risk of waking up one morning to find that they cut your power/phone/television.

Oh, there's no way in hell I'd live in the dorms now. Once you get past the first few years they're annoying, filled with underclassmen, and impossible to get any serious studying done in.

I'd say at least 6 months of work history (part time is ok).

You will also need to qualify credit and income wise.

Plus have references.

They may require 1-2 months rent as deposit. So if you can cough up the deposit, you should be approved assuming you pass the other checks.

I've been in 'em for 2, and I'll be in them for another year. Luckily I'm moving into the best/most selective dorm for Juniors & above, which has air conditioning & bathrooms in the rooms, so it shouldn't be too bad. I'd like to get an apartment, but my parents split my tuition & housing per the divorce settlement, so if I moved into an apartment I risk losing some funding (from my dad's side). :disgust:

And I'm working on getting my career going by taking an unpaid R.O. position with the municipal PD, so that's going to take up some time in addition to school, so I don't have a lot of time left for a paying job.

agreed.

after a semester of living off-campus, whenever I visited my friends in the dorms I noticed that they all had this really bad and overpowering smell.

dorms is the place to meet possible apt roomates. I recommend living in them for at least 1 year. (dorms are also often more expensive to live in than in an apartment) again it depends on where you plan to go. Where do you plan to go?

What do you mean references RossMAN?

It'll be nice if I can find a hot girl in the future to share an apartment and divide rent.

I should have said personal references. Non-family people who know you, such as friends, class mates and co-workers.

$0/month (unless you want to count birthday cash in August that inevitably gets used toward the rent).

I didn't work while in school, but I was able to make enough during summers and holidays to be able to live off of my savings account. I kinda lucked out, though. My summer/holiday job was in NYC, so I was getting paid pretty decently, and my college was in the middle of nowhere, so the rent was pretty cheap.

$350/month, all utilities included (except cable/internet), for a very large 1-bedroom apartment with a roommate. sucked to have a roommate, but it was a good situation. his g/f had a single on-campus, so he stayed there almost every night. only time he slept in the apartment for extended periods of time were summers/holidays, when I was home anyways.
