I'm working as a pc tech in a small shop out in the south burbs of Chicago. I like the work but the pay is lacking. I would'nt mind doing any kind of IT work as long as it pays a little better. Ideally I'd like to work for myself doing PC repairs, but it's taking a long time for me to get a good client base. I also love anything related to linux, I might try to get certified one day.

So what kind of IT work are you guys doing?

I'm an IT Consultant specializing in VMware and storage.

Salaried position with benefits otherwise I never would have taken it. Company is full of great people and they're really committed to training us and keeping us happy.

I'm a UNIX/SAN Engineer, I enjoy it well enough. I like solving crazy/complex problems.

edit: If you need any help getting started with Linux feel free to IM or PM me, OP.

I was an Active Directory/Exchange/Notes/ISA/Other Misc Microsoft/VMWare engineer and one-time IT Manager, now focusing on Sharepoint architecture design and development. I loved VMWare and miss it, but Sharepoint is also huge and gaining traction everywhere. I work for a non-IT company and have awesome benefits and perks.

I'm a sys admin.

I'm looking to get more involved with vmware, because we're already heavy in virtualization and moving more and more that direction.

Of course, I'd rather my title be "lottery winner" or perhaps "Wealthy International Raconteur" but this is OK for now.

Network architect consultant. Was on the SP side of the house from a design perspective for a good while but am now refocusing to data center design because there's so much possibility there for somebody with the right skills. SAN/FiberChannel is going to die and the networking guys are going to take it over. It's still a good field to get into but there is a steep learning curve.

Sr. Sys Admin here work with windows/exchange/AD/vmware for a company under the archdiocese of miami -- good news is i should have this job for awhile, bad news is that it can be pretty boring when there's nothing going on. pay is okay, should be higher.

Pick a skillset and if you want to make the big bucks, become a consultant. A consultant can make 2 to 3 times what a "regular" employee of a company makes with the exact same skills. I'll probably do that eventually myself, though it will be so tough to give up what I have now as the perks and benefits are awesome.

I'm a general IT support guy at a 250 person (but swiftly growing) healthcare company. I do a lot of stuff from general troubleshooting to computer inventory management to AD to bringing in cabling vendors.

I'm not sure which field I want to specialize in more: security or network design. It's one of those.
