what kind of hl2 framerates would i get?

Read the 6600GT and HL2 articles on the main page, it would probably run nicely at 1024x768 as opposed to the 640x480 low quality stuttering you'll get with your current 3D "accelerator."

i did- i guess my question is how much different will my framerate be with a much slower processor than the one AT uses in their benches?

According to this thread you can probably get the 1024x768 with your current CPU and either the 6600GT or a plain 6800.

I'd wait a couple of weeks on the 6600GT AGP if you can stand to, or try to find a Black Friday deal via GottaDeal.com, since right now the only 6600GT AGP I found at newegg was priced at the "gouge a scarce item" price of $250 instead of the evenutal price of $200.

The FX line is terrible for that game. I would either migrate to a ATI 9700/9800 or spend the extra 50 on a 6600GT by which the review states is worth it for the game.

An extra 512 mb of ram will help too..I'm running a 6800 nu and 512 ram and the game hangs every once in awhile..probably due to my slow proc as well.
